The Fleet

Fishing boat at Portelet Harbour

The Fleet is a BBC radio drama devised by Rosalynd Holdbrook. Since her early retirement from the Corporation it has been produced by Kira Spooner. The lead character, Thomas Thoumine, is played by George Dixon.

The soap is broadcast at 7.15pm every weekday in Guernsey, along the south coast of mainland Britain. At the start of book 1, Dead in the Water it has just celebrated its tenth year on air with extended edition, which was broadcast live with the various actors split up between the different studios and recording booths at the station.

It concerns the crew of a shipping vessel called the MV John Gregg, which brings in fish from the waters surrounding the Channel Islands. The storyline was inspired by Rosalynd Holdbrook’s memories of her father fishing on a boat that was moored at St Sampson in the north of the island.
